Valentine's Day: From Dollar Tree Fillable Containers to Keepsake Ornaments

I've never been a pink person. Maybe it's (sorry Mom) having had a pink room or being inherently contrary and disliking what I'm supposed to like. I spent enough time in my pink room and in pink ballet tights etc. that it took me until recently to decide there's a shade of pink I do like and it's this pale pink, ironically called Ballet Slipper by Waverly. But since they're used to me being in black 24x7, I can take a bit of ribbing. This shade of pink goes well with black so there!

After Christmas, I found a pale pink tree at JoAnn for 80% off which inspired these ornaments since I had no Valentine's ornaments. I'll be sharing a couple others I made for the tree.

Supplies:
  • Heart Shaped Fillable Containers (Dollar Tree)
  • Coffee Filters
  • White Glue (Elmers)
  • No Prep Paint in White and Ballet Slipper (Waverly, Walmart)
  • Paper Crowns
  • Self Adhesive Rhinestones
  • Ribbon
  • Small Flower Embellishments

I found these fillable heart containers at Dollar Tree. I saw ornaments! See that last one with the string and tags inside? Didn't even take them out since I knew I was covering these and used my new favorite technique of coffee filters. While the no prep paint could have gone straight on the plastic, I like texture.

I squirted some glue onto the heart, covered a section then applied some of the coffee filters which I'd crumbled up and torn into usable pieces.

Repeat until all of your hearts are covered. I like to let these dry overnight before painting. Once dry, I applied a coat of the white Waverly no prep paint.

You can see how it looks like a texture paste. Once all of the hearts were painted and dry, I went over with the Ballet Slipper Waverly paint.

I was fine with some of the white peeking through. Once the pink coat was dry, I dry brushed a little silver on and then to add more bling, I used a translucent glitter paint to give it a final coat.

Time to embellish! I grabbed some things from my stash. I thought I might use both the wings and crowns shown here but ultimately went with the crowns.

I tacked the crowns down with a glue stick and then went over with a quick coat of glue. And because I'm a bling girl, I had to add some rhinestones! Sparkle sparkle!

I had some snowflake ornament hangers from my Christmas stash I thought worked with these since we're still in Winter. I grabbed these pink mini-flowers from my stash and added them to the center of the snowflake and then applied the rhinestones as shown. To finish, I made bows from black satin ribbon et voila!

See? I even did pink nails!

I have two more ornament projects I made for my tree which I'll share this week!

Home Decor: Repurpose Paper and Coffee Filter Flowers Into Giant Wreath

I hope everyone had a safe and Happy Fourth. I'm hoping we get some peace and quiet tonight because the dog was not happy last night. And when the dog's not happy, no one's happy! We're getting organized in our new home and took a few minutes this morning to whip up something for my new office.

In my last office, I had an accent wall for which I'd made a border of flowers that ran along the top. I couldn't bring myself to toss them when I took it down and knew I had an oversized wreath form that I was going to use for something in our old house but never did, so it was pretty easy to visualize this oversized wreath. It was quick, easy, and a great way to re-purpose a bunch of rolled and layered paper and coffee filter flowers I'd already made.

Supplies:
  • Giant Wire Wreath Frame ( I don't remember the dimensions but it was the biggest one Michaels sells)
  • Rolled / Layered Paper Flowers. You can design your own or use patterns for your cutting machine.
  • Coffee Filter Flowers. I made these freehand. I love coffee filters because they retain their shape and don't wilt like tissue papers.
  • Glue gun and glue.

I started with the largest of the paper flowers. I had three this size so I did kind of a triangle shape to evenly disperse them.

Then, I took the smaller paper flowers and distributed them in between, just kind of eyeballing the spacing.

When I made these, I intentionally made different styles of flowers because I didn't want everything to match. After I had all of the paper flowers placed, I started adding the coffee filter flowers which again, I didn't make all the same.

These were easy to fluff back up since they'd gotten a little squished being boxed up! I filled in the bare spots, fluffing along the way until the wreath form was filled in. It went very quickly and now is the first thing I've hung on the wall in my new office!

Welcome Back Mojo

JC's Loft

At least for now. I’ve missed you, and still think you were locked in the garage with the empty Christmas bins, now filled and returned to their home for the next 11 months. I was in  a Valentine’s mood but this is something I can keep up all the time:

Guess how it started out? No?

Pizza. Box. Lid. Yup.
Drew and cut a heart shape out freehand and covered with scrapbook paper.

Then I made layered paper flowers from some more of the scrapbook paper ( Paper Pizazz…Tan Swirly Flowers…that’s the real name) and hot glued those around the heart:

I had a coffee filter medallion left over from some book page wreaths I’d made and decided to plop that down in the middle. Plop is a technical term.

Then I added various brown buttons to the center of each flower, added a gold rhinestone on top of those and finished the whole thing off with a brown ribbon bow. I’d been debating doing neutrals for my Valentine’s décor…think I’m liking that idea.
