Tucson Bead Mineral Gem and Fossil Show Season

Late January / early February every year, countless vendors come to Tuscon for one of if not the biggest gatherings of gemstones, beads, minerals, fossils and other components in markets and shows in multiple venues. Tents start going up in December. Whether you're looking for finished jewelry, fine gems, gemstones, beads, findings, components,  a rockhound looking for raw materials, a collector looking for massive pieces to add to galleries or a home, a fossil collector...there's literally something for everyone! Gift store buyers, hobbyists, professional jewelry designers, you name it, they're all here at one or more of over 60 venues!

I've wanted to go since long before we moved down here. Until you actually see it, it's really hard to appreciate the scope and the amount of work that goes into it. Every continent and multiple states are represented. I remembered this year to take pics to share from the three shows I went to. If anyone has made it to every venue in one season, I tip my hat to them because it can take several hours to get through some of them! Most are open to the public and don't have an entrance fee. There are some that are wholesale only and many are a mix with pricing tiered by wholesale vs retail while others will give wholesale pricing to the public.

The first show I went to this year is the first one I'll probably always go to because there's a vendor there whose findings I stock up on US Bead Warehouse. No affiliation with them.

This is an indoor venue held in the conference center of the casino. A combination of artisan made finished jewelry, a great selection of handmade lampwork and blown glass beads, gemstone beads, findings etc. It's also part art fair with things like handmade cards, clothing and household items from several countries etc.

Numerous vendors with tables of beads!

Finished Jewelry
Several vendors with chain from silver plated to sterling and copper!

As mentioned, other great finds like these quilled cards!

This show has two large tents with food trucks in between them! Again, an eclectic mix of raw (I mean RAW) materials to finished fine jewelry and art.

Slabs of encased fossils, boxes of raw gemstones, geodes, polished home decor items.

Fossil skeletons! I love to see the kids who've tagged along stare open-mouthed at these and always want to have their pictures taken.

And of course, beads beads and more beads.

This one is HUGE. You'll see why it needs a LOT of space so it's mostly open air tents.

Large geodes to display. Amethyst here. And these aren't even the largest. There are even larger ones, mounted on stands. Things you'd see in hotels, office buildings, galleries, or high end homes.

Mr. Chocolate has loved gorillas since childhood so I had to take a pic of this for him!

Sculptures from every culture!

Lamps, bowls, home decor items in every size and price point.

More tables on tables on tables of beads!

Mr. Chocolate should have come to this show with me because he LOVES Bumblebee Jasper and they had lots of cool pieces from sculptures to tumbled loose rocks, cabochons, beads, and I got him this slab which he totally loves. Glad I went with it because I came home to a very nice new upgraded air fryer / oven / dehydrator that has fourteen setings as a surprise!

At any rate, I hope you've enjoyed getting a peek into this annual event. I never stop wondering at the the things nature produces.

BFF Open House

Happy Friday Eve all! Things are starting to warm up here in the desert, at least during the day. Nights are still very cold which I have to remind Mr. Chocolate as he turns the thermostat way down during the day but it stays that way overnight and when I wake up with the chickens the next morning I do my Jack Nicholson from The Shining impression waiting for the heat to kick in!

Bead and Gem Show season is in full swing and it's so overwhelming! Seriously, every bead and gem producer is here this week!

This week I shared:

Let's take a look at some of the LOVEly ideas shared at last week's party!

Steph Creates Things shared this sweet Floral Hoop Centerpiece, perfect for Valentine's or Spring!

The Apple Street Cottage showed us how to repurpose a tea towel into this festive Valentine's Heart Wreath.

Creatively Beth shared this beautiful and bold Dollar Tree  Buffalo Plaid Heart Sign

And finally, how cute are these Nutter Butter Heart Cookies from Drugstore Divas?!

Thanks to all who linked up and can't wait to see the creativity in store this week. Happy Weekend Creative Peeps!

Valentine's or Anytime: Beaded Garland Tile Wall Art

Sharing another project made using a DT peel and stick tile. This is something I'll leave up year round in our bedroom.

Supplies:
  • Dollar Tree Peel and Stick Tile
  • Waverly White No Prep Paint
  • Beaded Garland
  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  • Embellishments

You already know the basics with these versatile tiles. I centered my heart template and cut out the shape, then painted it with white Waverly No Prep paint.

I had this beaded garland from Walmart in my Christmas stuff but ended up not using it so I "de-strung" them and used the white beads, saving the others for future projects.

I started at the center of the heart and glued beads around the heart.

After getting all of the beads attached, time to embellish!

I had these heart locks in my stash that seemed perfect for this, so I grabbed them along with some bright silver self-adhesive "rhinestones" from DAISO, the Japanese dollar store. I loved DAISO when I was in the PNW, was thrilled when they opened up north in the Phoenix Metro area dnd beyond thrilled when we finally got one up in Tucson and we're getting another one!

I attached one of the heart locks to the center of the tile using Diamond Glaze dimensional glue, then ran the metal rhinestones as shown.

To finish, I attached some black ribbon since I knew I was going to hang it, and made a coffee filter flower to top it off.

But wait! If you follow any blogs or Makers who are in DT as much as I am you've likely seen some of their new additions to decor items. These were a no-brainer for me when I saw them and were perfect accents to this piece.

It's rare that I don't alter or embellish my DT finds but this I left alone, placing one on either side of the heart and adding a coffee filter flower to the top.

Valentine's or Anytime: Shabby Glam Cardboard Hearts

I saved some boxes from Christmas deliveries to use in my crafting this year. I had a LOT of fun with these and already plan on making eggs and bunnies and who knows what else! And one box goes a long way.

Supplies:
  • Cardboard Shipping Box
  • Acrylic Paints
  • Ribbon
  • Misc Embellishments

Cut your box down to workable pieces. I made a template to trace onto the cardboard and cut out my hearts. You'll want to remove the top layer of paper to expose the corrugated layer underneath. To do this, I dipped a paintbrush into water and "painted" the hearts. Before it dries, peel the top layer and discard into your recycling. Some came off cleanly, some didn't. I didn't worry because since the nature of these is inherently shabby...who cares?!

Paint the hearts with acrylic paint in your choice of color. I was fine with a little of the cardboard showing through because again, shabby.

Imagination is your limit! I randomly dry brushed bright silver and gold  on the hearts and because I'm a Virgo, I painted the backs with my base color because otherwise, I'd have been up all night fixated on why I should have. I know me! Now for the real fun. I grabbed some ribbon and wrapped a few of the hearts.

This is one of those things I picked up at Michael's and I swear it keeps refilling itself because I use the embellishments. Mysterious!  I used Diamond Glaze dimensional glue to attach and added rhinestone hearts in coordinating colors.

These went on my Tiered Tray along with the Jeweled Hearts I previously shared.

Valentine's Decor: Tiered Jeweled Hearts Tray

When you're on a roll, keep rolling! I am in a groove on Valentine's projects and made some more ornaments using fillable plastic hearts. You can see my first set here. This time, I applied paint straight to the surface.

Supplies:
  • Fillable Plastic Hearts (Dollar Tree)
  • All Surface Paint ( I used Waverly No Prep Chalk Paint)
  • Ribbon
  • Hot Glue
  • Heart Shaped and Other Self-Adhesive Rhinestones

I decided to apply the paint directly to the surface of the hearts. This paint really does go on anything! I used a sponge spouncer to apply which distributes the paint evenly and without any streaks.

Apply the paint until each heart is covered.

I don't recommend having medical procedures that get you sent home with things like surgical tweezers or hemostats but if you happen to have them...they make great crafting tools! I use my hemostats regularly to hold things in place!

Once your hearts are painted the fun begins! I pulled out some ribbon from my stash and used hot glue wrap it around the hearts, and used more ribbon to make bows which I also glued to the tops.

I picked up these heart-shaped self-adhesive rhinestones at Dollar Tree and decided to use the two tones of pink.

I placed three of them in the middle of each heart, then placed small self-adhesive rhinestones on the hearts as shown.

I was making them to use on a thrifted tiered tray I switch out seasonally.

And then I added some other hearts I'll post about this week!
