Cardmaking: How to Make a Card Without Fancy Tools

My first crafting love is paper, specifically Card Making. Since childhood, I've loved pretty papers and my mom always made sure I had my own stationery, thank you notes etc. I still love "snail mail" and making and sending my own cards. And yes, I have all the "fancy tools" which I've accumulated over the years. But every so often it's just as much fun to use no tools and still make something pretty. This post is perfect for you if you've ever wanted to try making cards but don't want to invest in a lot of supplies.

First and foremost is your paper! Whether you buy scrapbook paper by the individual sheet or like me, tend towards "stacks" with just a few pretty papers, you can make a handmade card!

Supplies:
  • Coordinating Papers. I used a Craftsmart stack from Michaels
  • Cardstock. I prefer 110lb weight
  • Adhesive. Tape runner or if all you have is a glue stick, that'll work.
  • Paper Trimmer. If you don't have one, no problem. Craft knife or scissors will work. You'll just need a ruler.

A lot of my paper stash consists of "Hot Buy" stacks from Michaels. They often have them either 70% off or buy one get two free with the one being $19.99 so it averages out to less than $7 per stack and you can get anywhere from 48-60 pieces in each stack, some of which are double sided. But what I really love is, many of the stacks come with pages of sentiments that can be used as a focal for a card.

NOTE: These are a special category so not all of their paper pads qualify. Only those they usually have in their own section entitled "Hot Buy".

Each of these sentiments shown here is its own panel so you have multiple pieces you can use. I start by cutting these types of pages apart and choosing the panels I want to use as my card focal. Since all of the papers in the same stack coordinate, you can then choose other papers for your card knowing they'll all work together. For those without words you can either layer with pieces that have them or use stamps or stickers. Out of the panels from this sheet, I have enough to make 10 cards!

Card Base: You can cut your own ( I tend to ) or you can buy blank pre-cut cards usually either 5x7 or 4.25 x5.25. These may also be called A7 or A4 and can be found everywhere from office supply stores, craft stores, or specialty stores like Paper Source. If you're cutting your own, you will need to cut to desired size and score down the middle. I have a scoring board but you can easily do this by measuring to the center of your paper and using an embossing tool, or an empty ballpoint pen and a ruler to make the scoring line. Score, fold, burnish with a bone folder or scissor handle to give it a strong crease.

I usually cut my card(s) first and set aside, then work on the layers that will become the focal of the card.

Trim Sentiment Panel: Once you've cut your sentiment panel sheet apart, trim each piece as desired. This is why I don't worry about getting them cut perfectly from the main sheet.

Then using coordinating papers ( I have tons of scraps on hand so if you are starting from nothing, you may want a couple of additional papers for this part). I chose mirror gold and silver glitter scraps and used these to mat the sentiment focal.

Then I cut my coordinating papers to fit my card base...in this case I cut one 4.75x6.75 for a 5x7 card and then one 3.75x5.75 for the next coordinating layer.

So here you can see (left to right): Card base, first panel, second panel, matted focal

Center your focal piece on the second panel, attach with foam dots or squares to give your card some dimension. I get a lot of my basic supplies like foam dots from Dollar Tree. They also sell one time use tape runners and double sided foam tape.

I have this monster ATG Tape Gun that I've had for something like 20 years and if you find yourself really doing a lot of paper crafting, it is well worth the investment!

You'll layer your second panel to the first with your focal panel already applied and then the whole thing to your card base and you're done!

I used the same process for this second card and reversed the papers. In total I used three sheets from this pack with 45 remaining !

And since "sharing is caring" did I mention that Michaels has their Hot Buy Buy One Get Two Free deal going on this week?!  They don't even pay me to say that!

If you've ever wanted to try to make a card, I hope this is helpful!

Holiday 2020: Pet Lover "Paw-norments"

Our furbaby is such a huge part of our life! Huge, literally because she's over 120 lbs but huge in the place she has in our heart. I know this is true for others as well so I made a few of these "Paw-ornaments" aka "Pawnorments" for friends. They're actually frames so you can have your furbaby on your tree or wherever!

Supplies: (All of these supplies are from Michaels)
  • Wood Paw Ornament Frame
  • Acrylic Paints
  • Mirror Sequins

Like so many Makers, I pick up things post-season when they're on sale. That's how I keep my stash replenished!

The "Kids Crafts" at Michaels are some of my favorites. I found this post season last year. Simple and easy to alter or glam up! I've seen similar there this year.

Pop out the center and you're ready to paint!

I did a couple of coats of black Craftsmart paint, front and back.

Then added polka dots with white paint ( also Craftsmart).

I love these Mirror Sequins! There's something about them being so bright and shiny! I added these around the paws.

To finish, I used an extra large jump ring to attach a white glittered jingle bell and then printed a picture of my big girl sized to fit!

It was hard not to get the glare but you get the idea! She was so good while I was decorating, just laying and watching what was going on.

And of course, this would make a great kid's craft but since my kid is in grad school...

Cricut Foil Tool: Thanksgiving 2020 Cards

This week's BFF Open House Link Party continues here

I've had a fun week getting started on some Christmas and Hanukkah projects but today I'm sharing the cards I made for friends and family for Thanksgiving. For us, this year won't be much of a chance. PhD Man hasn't come home for Thanksgiving since undergrad since he comes for an extended stay over Christmas. Hoping that's the case this year! But, I know for many this will be a different Thanksgiving as we continue to make our way through this pandemic. Since I've always been remote from a lot of friends and family for whom I'm thankful, I've always made cards to send to them.

Supplies:
  • Marsh Flower Stack (Michaels)
  • Recollections Gray, Cream, Brown 110lb Cardstock (Michaels)
  • Cricut Foil Tool for Cricut Explore Air 2 or Cricut Maker
  • Cricut Foil
  • Gold Foil Cardstock ( Recollections, Michaels)
  • Tape Gun and Foam Tape

I found this paper pad during one of Michaels "Buy One, Get Two Free" promotions on their Hot Buy papers and decided I really loved these colors and patterns for Thanksgiving cards.

I've been anxious to use the new Cricut Foil Transfer Kit I ordered in October, I'd already done my Halloween cards so I knew I was going to use it for my Thanksgiving cards. If you have a Cricut Explore or Maker YOU NEED THIS TOOL!  It works with the Cricut foil which is pressure based vs some foils that interact with a medium. This kit comes with three tip sizes which easily pop in and out of the housing which in turn pops easily in and out of the machine.

It was very straightforward to use. Follow the instructions that come with it or there are multiple tutorials on You Tube

The first thing to decide is your design. I went with a simple "Thankful" word and simple leaves and designed this in Cricut Design Space. Right in the SW you can choose "Foil" which makes things easy.

The kit comes with a selection of different foils but I also bought a standalone pack of 12x12 gold foil since I knew I'd be foiling all the things! You place what you want to foil, in this case I used a self adhesive cardstock on your mat then this is the only tricky part: you lay the foil on top and then tape down the edges either with the tape strips that come with the foil packs or you can also use Washi tape. It is important to make sure your foil is taut since the tool will tug on it a bit so lock it down!

Once your machine is done, peel back the foil and look how cool!  I then cut these into the sizes I needed for my cards, mounted on gold mirror panels, and mounted in the middle of my cards.

The Marsh Flower paper collection already had some foiled papers so these coordinated nicely. I selected my papers and cut out panels to make my cards:

  • 5x7 Cards made from 110lb cardstock
  • 4.75 x 6.75 panels made from selection of papers with another layer cut 3.5x5.5 and mounted on gold foil panels cut 3.75x5.75
  • "THANKFUL" focal adhered with foam tape
  • Layer as shown

This tool is a game changer for me and I'm sure I don't yet know in how many ways!

Fall Decor: Rustic Silk Leaves and Feathers Wreath

Happy Monday all! We in America move full speed ahead to our national day of thanks and gluttony and I've finished the last of the things I'll make ( I think ) for this short season between Halloween and Christmas. Anxious to get started on some Christmas goodies so be on the lookout!

Also humbled and excited to have been again featured in the Hometalk weekly newsletter last week! They included my Plastic Egg Acorns and Pinecones and I couldn't be more tickled. If you aren't on Hometalk, you should check it out both as a place to share your creations and to find even more inspiring ideas!

Supplies:
  • Square Wreath Form. I actually had some inserts from 12x12 shadow box frames that I used but you  could also use a square frame.
  • Silk Leaves (Michaels 80% off)
  • Twig Vase Fillers (Dollar Tree)
  • Feathers ( Michaels)
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

From left to right: Shadow Box Frame Inserts, Silk Leaves, Dollar Tree Birch Stumps and Twigs

The frame inserts are not the sturdiest so I glued two of them together to stabilize them. The silk leaves I found for 80% off at Michaels. I used two packages of 30 with a few left over.

These came in two sizes, the larger having some gold veining and the smaller being plain. I alternated these around the wreath. Pretty straightforward. After I glued the leaves around the frame I placed a few of the birch "stumps" , offset, "because I did" which is a technical creative term!

I have a ton of these twigs left over so may save them for next year or throw them in a vase.

I grouped three feathers (Michaels, Art Minds or Creatology) at the base of each "stump", then added some of the twigs.

To finish, I had some of these Acrylic Gem Maple Leaves in my stash from a past project so glued a few of those on. Living in the West, this may be another thing I leave up year round. Haven't decided yet. We don't have specifically "Western" decor but I like some bits here and there.

Et voila!

Halloween: 2020 Cards Using the Spook Hill Stack from Michaels

I make cards all year round for all holidays, birthdays etc. but Halloween through Christmas and Hanukkah is full production mode. If you've been around my blog for a minute, you know that I am a helpless paperholic so I always love taking advantage when Michaels has deals on their "Hot Buys" especially when they're either buy one get two free ( I mean c'mon!) or they're on sale for $4.99. Mr. Chocolate will try to convince you that I own all of them. Not true. But many? Yes, that I admit to!

I picked up this stack called "Spook Hill" (by Recollections) on one of their buy one get two free ( I get giddy just typing that!) and it was so my style! It includes foiled and non-foiled papers.  Now oddly, I can't find it on their website but it is available on Amazon.

This isn't a tutorial post but almost all of my cards are 5x7 and I used Black Recollections 110 lb cardstock ( Michaels ) for most of them w/ the exception of a couple I made using a heavy piece of 12x12 paper from my stash.

I went with the color palette of the stack: Black, grey, gold, white.

I cut panels 5.75 x 4.75 and layered with gold foiled transparencies ( previous Michaels trips!) and cut out some Halloween images using my Cricut Explore which I layered using foam tape. For the Haunted House image, I added windows using paper scraps I had on hand.

Finished everything with gold self adhesive rhinestones in gold! And yes, those of you who know who you are, they're on their way. Boo!
