Field Trip: Stencil A DIY Craft Studio

Happy Monday friends! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I extended mine one day and took Friday off and celebrated a belated "Galentine's Day" with two girlfriends and we had the BEST time at a local place I discovered and am so thrilled to tell you about. If you are near or visiting the Scottsdale area and need to get your creative fix on, let me tell you....Stencil A DIY Craft Studio is the place for you!

Part of the fun of moving to a new state is finding new resources. I was Googling one day and this place came up and immediately went on my list of places I knew I needed to check out.

What is it ?
Let me let Nicole, the creator and owner of Stencil describe it:

Stencil is a DIY craft studio with over 100 projects for all ages and skill levels. If you’ve been collecting ideas on Pinterest but haven’t taken the crafting plunge, then Stencil is the place for you. Or maybe you’re a regular crafter and you want to advance your skill level but you don’t have some of the equipment needed to craft your creations, then Stencil is the place for you.

It's located in a multi business office park just off of Scottsdale Road.

When you first enter, you are treated to examples of all of the fun and beautiful things you can create at Stencil. Each project has its own price which includes materials, studio time and help and guidance from Nicole who is wonderful and patient. What's even more wonderful is, whether you've never crafted in your life or you're an experienced maker, you'll feel right at home.

Of the two friends I was with, one is a regular DIYer and the other does not consider herself crafty or creative ( she is, she just doesn't think she is).  The hardest thing you have to do is decide what you want to make. I mean look at the options:

Gorgeous paper flowers?

Seasonal or Holiday ?

Coffee or tea lover? Wine lover? Home decor for yourself or as a gift? Check, check , check

Everything pictured is something you can make at Stencil. Nicole has things so well planned and laid out.

Once you decide what you will make (one friend and I chose a String Art Project and my friend who doesn't consider herself craft, went big and chose a Utensil Caddy), she gives you a packet with instructions and templates, and then pulls the basic materials you need which are pre-cut for you. You then grab an apron, safety goggles if appropriate, and follow the instructions that take you along the supply wall to grab what you'll need for your project:

Stencil Studio Color Station

If your project involves paint, then you'll choose it from the Color Station.

Stencil Studio Hardware Station

The Hardware Station contains things like nails, screws, eye hooks in different sizes and you select what's needed per the project instructions. Nicole even has these colorful little Hardware Containers to put everything in. Shown to the left are color choices of yarn.

Stencil Studio Tool Board

As you can see, the Tool Board is complete and well organized. Hammers, screwdrivers, wire cutters, scissors, rulers etc. On the shelf below are drills.

Not shown is the area where Nicole has all of the pre-cut wood for projects (well organized like everything else shown) and bigger tools like a pneumatic drill, nail gun etc. Don't worry if you're intimidated by these. She will help you or do it for you.

OK so what did I make?

My friend S. and I each decided to make a String Art project and we both made a Prickly Pear Cactus. One of the best things about Stencil is while Nicole has examples up for you, you can change the colors, color combinations etc. to suit your own style.

As mentioned, Nicole pulls some of the supplies needed for your project. For mine, that was four pre-cut boards with  brace boards for the back to hold them together. We followed the instructions to sand each board, front back  and sides.

Once all the boards were stained we laid them face down and put the brace boards on the back. Stencil Studio is perfect if you want to do more DIY projects without having to invest in power tools like saws, drills etc. or supplies like stains that you may or may not use again.

Safety first! Protective eyewear.

I was having so much fun and got so focused working on my project, I didn't take step by step pictures but once the base for my project was done, the next steps were :

  • Remove Prickly Pear template from the well organized instruction packet Nicole provided
  • Nail through the pattern so you have the outline of your image
  • Select string color
  • Watch video Nicole has ready for you on tablets in the work space
  • Have fun with your string

I chose an ebony stain, white nails, and sage green string for my cactus. Nicole also has pre-cut flowers for your project.

My friend S. chose a grey stain, white nails and teal string for her cactus:

And our friend who doesn't think she's crafty, put together this gorgeous Utensil Caddy from scratch. She built, glued, stained and stenciled it! Oh did I mention? Nicole will custom cut your stencil for you.

I blurred out the name for privacy.

Cost for my project was $35 which included all materials, guidance, and 2.5 hrs studio time and cleanup. If you make a reservation in advance like we did, you get $5 off your project.  In addition to open studio time, there are classes and special events.

Again, if you are local or come to the desert and need to get your craft on, I highly recommend a visit!

We left so happy with our projects, and Mr. Chocolate now has another place to look if he can't find me besides Michaels and JoAnn's !

Stencil is located 1 mile south of Scottsdale Quarter/Kierland Commons at:
14435 N. 73rd St.

Scottsdale, AZ 85260

Finally, it wouldn't be Valentine's Day without chocolate right? These slow cooker fudge brownies from Looney For Food will do the trick! There's a very secret ingredient too!

Black White and Antique Gold Birthday Card

Sharing an easy birthday card that requires no cutting machines or equipment besides a paper cutter and a punch.

Supplies:
  • DCWV "Decor Noir" Stack ( I've had this one for a while so not sure if it's still around but I know I've seen similar stacks at JoAnn)
  • Black Cardstock ( I used Recollections 110 lb, Michaels)
  • Antique Gold foiled transparency ( Michaels)
  • Cream and Antique Gold glitter scraps
  • Recollections ( Michaels) Washi Tape
  • Self adhesive 3D sticker embellishment strips ( stash)
  • Star Punch
  • Foam Tape
  • Double sided tape ( I used my trusted tape gun)

The Deco Noir stack includes a couple sheets of different sentiments / sayings like the one I used for the focal. Cut from sheet, trim, add two strips of washi tape, add 3D embellishment strip,  mount to cream glitter scrap. Punch Antique Gold star from glitter scrap and mount with foam tape as shown.

Cut the black cardstock to 5x7 and trim a sheet of the "alphabet" paper from the stack to the same size. Adhere to front of card.  Cut  the transparency to 4.5 x 6.5, and layer the front panel to it, then adhere to card and voila. Done and done!

BFF Open House

Happy Friday Eve all and to all of you in the path of the Polar Vortex...I hope you're staying inside, warm, pipes aren't frozen etc.  PhD Man ( Son ) is smack in the center of it in Chicago and despite is telling him to stay put yesterday just had to go pick up his comics that are released every Wednesday.  Layered up in long underwear, two layers of pants, four shirts, his heaviest coat, boots, scarves two hats and a hood lol. Reminded my of the little brother from "A Christmas Story"

Image result for a christmas story can't put my arms down

I guess you don't want to hear it's in the high 60's 70's here in the desert? Don't worry. We'll get ours in the Summer when we're living on the Sun.

OK let's see what everyone's been up to this week!

If you're looking for last minute ideas for your Super Bowl party this weekend, Leslie over at From Play Dates to Parties has got you covered with free printables!

If you're not much into the big game and want to craft something, Lisa from Fresh Vintage by Lisa S has a great upcycle. Perfect for any leftover gift tins you may have from Christmas.

Check out these faux leather earrings from Try It Like It.  These were made using the Cricut Maker but could also be done either freehand or using dies I'm sure.

Finally, one thing I really want to do is be able to attend a blog conference or two.  A Labour of Life has taken the time to help us all out and make a list of upcoming conferences. I recently attended a blogger meetup in advance of Creativation and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow creatives and bloggers and I look forward to doing more of it!

OK let's see what everyone's been up to this week!

Baby Boy Cards

I made a couple of cards this weekend to congratulate new parents and grandparents on the arrival of a new bundle of joy. I decided to keep things fairly monochromatic in hues of blue .

Supplies Used:
  • White Cardstock (Recollections, Michaels 110 lb)
  • Pale Blue 12x12 Glitter Paper ( Recollections, Michaels,  Holiday Glitz and Glitter Stack)
  • Light and Medium Blue 12x12 Cardstock (Craft Smith, Michaels Blues Stack)
  • Baby Boy cut file (Silhouette Online Store Design ID #17765)
  • Onesie cut file (Silhouette Online Store Design ID # 59708

Misc:
  • Gold paper scrap
  • Heart punch
  • Washi Tape
  • Adhesive ( I live for my tape gun)
  • Paper Cutter
  • Silhouette Cameo 3
  • Foam tape
Instructions:
  • Using paper cutter, cut and score white cardstock to 5x7  card
  • Cut blue glitter paper panel to 4.75 x 6.75
  • Cut pale blue cardstock to 4.25 x 6.25
  • Layer glitter and pale blue panels as shown.
  • Add washi tape to opposite corners as shown
  • Download, size, cut "Baby Boy" and "Onesie" images.
  • I cut sets of images from the glitter paper and from the medium blue paper. I like giving images a little bit of a shadow by layering them. I find this gives them some depth.
  • Mount cut  images to card panels using foam tape
  • Punch heart from gold scrap and mount to center of onesie

I made matching panels for the inside of the card but forgot to take a pic when they were blank. You can see a little peeking out from the card that's laying down.

BFF Open House Link Party Back Up And Running!

YAY! Happy Friday Eve all. I'm back up and running on my laptop with a new SSD hard drive and all my fonts and data files in tact. Whew! Thanks for  hanging in there.

Can I scare you? We're already almost done w/ January and Friday 1/25 marks exactly eleven months until Christmas. Can you believe it? I have vowed that I'm starting much earlier on handmade gifts this year because time flies.

OK here are some features from last week's party. Thanks for hanging in and hanging with me!

I love wood slices and have mostly seen them used as trays or plaques, but totally love this idea from Stephanis at  Abbotts At Home to use one as a hanging rack!

I have always had a thing for birch trees. There is just something about them that is so appealing to me so I couldn't stop staring at these Hand Painted Birch Tree Wine Glasses from Chas's Crazy Creations. You could easily do on a plate, platter, vase. So Pretty!

Also in love with this chair makeover from Virginia at Artsy VaVa

Finally, as we're getting ready for Valentine's Day, check out this amazing cheesecake from Butter With a Side of Bread:

Wouldn't that be a special treat for your special Valentine?

OK let's see what everyone's been up to this week!
